Using Your Birth Space to Your Advantage

7/2/2025

Your birth room is more than just a bed and a monitor — it’s a space that can either support or stall the flow of labour depending on how it’s used. And the best part? You often have access to some amazing tools — if you know they’re there.

Before the big day arrives, one of the best things you can do is chat to your care provider or hospital about what’s available in the room you’ll be birthing in. Some hospitals are beautifully stocked with rebozo-ready towels, birthing stools, pools, and dimmable lighting… and some are, well, less so.

Asking ahead of time means you and your birth support team can create the calm, supportive environment your body and baby need. It also helps your partner feel confident walking in the room and knowing exactly how to set things up.

💡 Why the Birth Space Matters

Your environment influences your hormones — and your hormones influence your birth. Oxytocin (your labour love hormone) flows when you feel calm, safe, and supported. Harsh lighting, too much noise, or feeling out of control can interrupt this flow.
That’s why making small adjustments to your space can have a big impact on how labour unfolds.

👀 So what’s usually in a birth room?
Here’s a sneak peek of the most common (and some surprising!) tools that might be waiting for you:

  • Birth pool
  • Shower and bath
  • Birth ball and peanut ball
  • Floor mats and knee pads
  • Wall railings (for leaning or movement)
  • Warm towels and blankets
  • Birth stools and bean bags
  • Toilets and regular chairs for alternative positions
  • Speaker for music
  • Dim lighting or plug-in fairy lights
  • Heat packs and gas & air
  • Saline injections for back pain

Want to walk in feeling ready to set the space like a pro?

🎁 Download the free PDF checklist I made just for birth partners — so they can scan the room and go:
“Right, lights off, mat out, where’s the ball?” Grab it below!

💛 One more thing…

I go through how to actually use every one of these tools in my online birth course — including when to use what, how to support baby’s position, and how to support physiological birth in real time.

If you’re preparing for birth and want to walk in feeling confident and calm, this course is your go-to.
